Peter Henry Emerson
Slippery Path - Winter Scene, 1888
Photogravure, w20.5 cm x h22.9 cm (8.0625" x 9")
Featuring this one because the medium, "photogravure", is essentially a new vocab word for me, and the maker of this image was apparently an early pioneer for the method. The wiki page for 'photogravure' is
here, and a lot more is
here, but the gist of it is putting a photo-based etching onto a metal plate so that the plate can make highly detailed and tone-nuanced reproductions: this was one of the first methods of 'photography' to gain traction as 'fine art'. There is also
a video if you want to see the process!
